Mumbling Mommy

This post is brought to you by the Family Orbit Blog

Kids use the internet nowadays for many purposes, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. They are encouraged to study online and research their homework. There are also plenty of fun educational games and websites designed for kids and teens. Many kids rely on their phones or other devices for their social life as well and connect with their friends on a number of platforms.

As a parent, it can sometimes be a worry as it’s another medium for bullying and it can be difficult to police. The best thing you can do is get a little more tech-savvy and follow these tips to keep your kids safe online.

Set limits

Set limits on screen time. There are many ways to limit kids’ screen time. Firstly, encourage other activities. Screen time is fine for keeping them entertained and many aspects of it can be educational, but it’s important to encourage their interests in other areas. Focus more on outdoor play and sports and exercise. You could also set “no-screen” times of the day. Always offer an alternative activity to spend time together instead.

Lead by example

If you’re going to expect your child or teenager to limit their screen time, then you should lead by example. Don’t flaunt your screen usage in front of them if you’ve set limits. Ideally, set a “no-screen” time of the day that the whole family can follow. It’s also advisable to educate yourself on current electronics so that you’re more equipped to explain to your kids why you’re limiting screen time, and any possible risks of using the internet.

Communicate

Communication is key, especially when it comes to parenting teens. It can sometimes be a challenge, however. You want to let them have their independence and privacy, but at the same time take an interest in what they’re doing online. Don’t set rules without calmly explaining the reason you’re doing so, and try to create a feeling of mutual respect and healthy communication. This way, your kids will be more likely to come to you if they are having any difficulties online.

Track usage

There are new apps and features which allow parents to track and control mobile use. If you’re worried about an unknown number appearing on your kid’s phone, for example, this new article explains how you can trace phone numbers. You can also install tracking software to always see the whereabouts of your kids’ phones, giving you more peace of mind. Nowadays, you can also link your devices, so that you have parental control remotely.

Upgrade your software

If you want your children to be safe online, it’s important to frequently update your software. There are many reasons why software updates are important. Your software will be more compatible with the latest in cybersecurity and data protection. Keep an eye on your updates and consider upgrading your hardware as well to prevent any vulnerabilities or weaknesses in your system. Keep your kids safe online by using the latest in state-of-the-art technology and tools.
