Karyn Cole Karyn Cole is the lucky mom of 2-year-old girl/boy twins, Mia and Miles. After teaching elementary school for over 15 years, she now spends her days trying to enrich her class of two and organizing the chaos that is her household. After bedtime, she enjoys baking, crafting, and watching bad reality TV.

Is it possible to hit the pause button and enjoy this stage for just a while longer?

Where has the year gone? I can’t believe it, but our twins are about to turn three! Over this past year, Mia and Miles have mastered the art of conversation, using the potty, pedaling tricycles and riding roller coasters. They are sweet and silly and make me laugh all day long.

But my twinados continue to move toward being more and more independent every day. As we approached this momentous birthday, a series of things happened that really brought home the fact that they aren’t babies any longer. They aren’t even toddlers. I guess at this new stage, M&M would be considered preschoolers. Which brings me to our first major milestone.

This past week I registered M&M for preschool. Though the actual day that they will begin attending school is six months away, I will admit that the simple act of filling out the paperwork made me a bit emotional. Don’t get me wrong. I’m certainly looking forward to the small pockets of alone time school will provide me, but this is the first time Mia and Miles will step into a situation I cannot control. They will have to learn to deal with many different personalities and to listen and follow directions in a group setting. I am excited for all the new experiences coming their way, but it will be both strange and wonderful to be alone in the house for pretty much the first time in three years!

The other big change arrived in large cardboard boxes courtesy of Amazon Prime and Wayfair. Just before their birthday, both Mia and Miles’ bedrooms got a big kid makeover. New beds replaced the familiar cribs, whose sides had long since come down. New dressers held their not so tiny clothes in neat piles. We hung new shelves for their favorite books and some of their treasures.  Their rooms now reflect their unique personalities rather than reflecting my taste and choices.

Friends have warned me that the “terrible twos” are nothing compared to the threenage years. But I actually loved the terrible twos with my twins. I’m choosing to go into this next year filled with optimism for what the future holds. Because in a blink of an eye, my threenagers will be teenagers, and I don’t want to miss a thing!
