This month, my best friend and I took a little road trip and had a girls’ weekend in order to see Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour. This is the second time we’ve seen Taylor in concert together, the first time being over two years ago for the Red Tour. We proudly told whoever asked where we were going and why we were in town, regardless of our age. In no way are we old, but it is safe to say we are over the average age of a Taylor Swift fan base. I am absolutely not ashamed to be a Taylor Swift fan though, and here is why:

5 Reasons to be a Taylor Swift Fan

  1. Taylor is an incredibly kind person. While I have never met her in person, I have read numerous stories of ways she interacts with fans and staff. She has done and continues to do seriously nice things. A few examples include paying for cancer treatments, donating money toward student loan debt, showing up to bridal showers, baking cookies and inviting fans to her home, and even orchestrating a series of Christmas surprises she self-dubbed as “Swiftmas.” She puts a lot of good karma out in the world. That’s the kind of celebrity I can get behind.
  2. She is genuinely real. I’ve seen Taylor in concert twice now, watched multiple television appearances and listened to the exclusive extras from her albums. She laughs at herself. She makes fun of herself. She is humble. You can see the sparkle in her eyes as fans cheer her on during live performances. You can hear just how grateful she is for her success in her voice. There is no doubt that she can put on a good show, but there is an authenticity about her that you don’t find with other celebrities.
  3. Her level of talent is inspiring. She sings. She dances. She plays multiple musical instruments. And that’s just what she’s most known for. She is a song writer, having penned well over 200 original songs. She has contributed creative directing for many of her videos and concerts. She is also a painter, a baker, an actress, and a writer. I read somewhere that one day she wants to write her own biography. I would buy it in a heartbeat just like I have her albums.
  4. She speaks up for what is right. Tay Tay has summed up feminism very simply by saying, “[It] just means that you hope women and men will have equal rights and equal opportunities.” She further says that she doesn’t hate men. Her lyrics are real representations of relationships she has had, including ones that went well and some that well, didn’t. To the naked eye, it appears that Taylor believes in old fashioned love and that’s completely okay with me. She isn’t afraid to say what is on her mind. I will happily raise my daughters to love like Taylor does. Heartbreak is part of life, too, and it makes us who we are. But even more than speaking up for love and equal rights, Taylor speaks out against bullying and gives youth hope that they can overcome those awkward teenage years. And Taylor speaks out for herself and other musical artists, too, with the most recent decisions made with Spotify and Apple over getting paid fairly for the music they share. Taylor has a lot of power because of her celebrity status, and she uses it well without abusing it.
  5. She is relatable. Let’s face it; I’m not your average T Swift fan. I’ve been married going on 10 years. I have 3 kids. And I have released exactly zero albums. Taylor and I aren’t exactly on the same wavelength as far as life accomplishments go. But somehow, no matter who you are, you can listen to the lyrics she has written and find something that is so relatable, you are brought to tears. (Try listening to “Never Grow Up” if you don’t believe me.) Plus, Taylor is basically just a crazy cat lady with dance moves that prove all of us can rock out like the best of them.

In the end, I would be proud to have Taylor as a real life friend. I would be proud to have my daughters grow up to be like her. And I am proud to be a Taylor Swift fan now. What is your favorite thing about Taylor Swift? Are you a Swiftie fan-girl like I am? I want to hear it all.
